Hanapa'a 2014
Scot Spencer, Dino Miranda, Hunter Shiraishi, & Steve Shiraishi pictured with the Hanapa'a Queen and day two's catch: 103 pound marlin, 30 pound yellowfin, 20 pound mahimahi, and 2 smaller mahimahi that didn't qualify. Day one we had one 25 pound ono. We also caught 10 aku, and could have caught lots more, but aku isn't a qualifying tournament fish. We didn't place in this year's Hanapa'a, but it is always a fun event that we look forward to. Good fishing, team! We'll get 'em next year.

Jordan Smith, Buzz Chase, Mitch Larson, Esther Larson, Lily Larson, & Jerred Chase caught 4 yellowfin & 11 aku
We left the harbor right at 5am in 10-25 kph trades. When we got to the buoy we could tell one of our lures had taken a hit. We ran bait at the buoy and hooked a big yellowfin. Esther hopped in the chair and landed a 100 pound ahi. Way to go Esther! We came back with more bait and hooked another big yellowfin. Mitch battled this fish for almost an hour before landing it. It was tough to tell whose fish was bigger, but at the scale, Mitch's ahi weighed 99 pounds. We were jigging while we had bait out and were landing 5-8 pound skipjack tuna. We also caught a small yellowfin. We took another big yellowfin strike, but the line broke and we lost it. We kept baiting and hooked another big yellowfin. Buzz reeled in an 88 pounder in record time. We were hoping to catch a mahimahi or ono for dinner, but didn't see any on the way in. Great catch everyone! Aloha, Scot & Captain Steve

Lucas Hasshaw, Dylan Walsh, Dan Hasshaw, & Dennis Walsh caught 1 mahimahi
We headed out late in 10-20 kph trades. We ran the ledge in the morning with no strikes, so we headed to a buoy. At the buoy, we baited up and hooked an 8 pound mahimahi. A minute later, Lucas landed it. Dinner just got better! We trolled some more, but nothing was biting. And no strikes on the way in. A slow half-day charter for the Kuuloa Kai, but our folk are still eating well tonight. Aloha Scot & Captain Steve

Jeffrey Miavez, Dave Miavez, Julie Miavez, & Dan McMullen caught 3 yellowfin & 9 aku
We left the harbor right at 5am in 10-25 kph trades. We ran bait at the buoy and had our first bite. It was a toothy critter that ran off with our bait AND the hook! Must have been an ono. We came back with a wire leader, but couldn't get any takers. We tried jigging and caught 3 yellowfin and 9 skipjack tuna. We slid down to another buoy and ran bait. We spotted a few mahimahi, one was even following us, but couldn't get them to bite. Nothing else there so we headed down to the next buoy. We saw a mahimahi and hooked something else, but it came off before we could tell what it was. We ran bait but no action. No strikes on the way in either. A brutal day, but that's fishing. Hope everyone still had a great day. Aloha Scot & Captain Steve

Sean Brislin, Nicholas Faagau, & Danny Damson caught 5 mahimahi & 2 ono
We left the harbor right on time in 10-25 kph trades. We headed to a buoy and took an ono strike on the way. Danny reeled in a 15 pounder. We got to the buoy, ran bait, and caught another ono and a mahimahi. We ran more bait and caught another mahimahi. We hooked another mahimahi but it jumped hook and got away. We headed to another buoy, came in with bait, and took a triple mahimahi strike. Everyone was fighting a mahimahi! We landed all three, then the porpoise showed up and shut down the bites. No other strikes on the way in, but a great catch for a half day. We look forward to fishing with you again. Aloha Scot & Captain Steve

Tim Morony caught 6 mahimahi, 1 barracuda, 4 yellowfin, & 7 aku
We left the harbor a little before 5am in 10-20 kph trades. We headed to a buoy and took a double trolling strike. We landed two mahimahi. We ran bait at the buoy and took another double mahimahi strike, landing them both. We caught one more mahimahi, then hooked a barracuda. Tim reeled in a 28 pound barracuda, putting him on our top angler scoreboard for 2014. Way to go Tim! We landed another mahimahi, then we hooked something else big. It took half a spool of line, then the line broke and we lost it. We headed to another buoy and ran bait. We caught a 30 pound yellowfin on light tackle. We were jigging while we were baiting and jigged up a 25 pound yellowfin. We landed the yellowfin and jigged up 2 smaller yellowfin and 7 skipjack tuna. We swung by another buoy on our way in and hooked a mahimahi, but lost it at the back of the boat. Tim did some great angling today! It was a pleasure fishing with you and look forward to seeing you again. Aloha, Scot, Hunter, & Captain Steve.
