It was dark as we took off on this day of 25 kph trades going to a west side buoy. Just before the buoy we took a marlin hit that slamed the rigger and jumped once and came off bummer. At the buoy we baited and got no hits so we jigged and caught some aku and shibi and ran an aku live. On our way in another marlin ate the purple softhead on the corner and screamed out 500 yards of line and then jumped once. Steve had this fish back to the boat in about 20 minutes, he did a great job reeling it in. It was easy at gaff and with a flying gaff and three half hithces on it's bill as I was subduing it she came back to life and with a rapid tail beat reared up and slid out of the half hiches and off the gaff and was gone. The good news is Steve took pictures before it escaped, and that it did not jump into the boat, which is very real danger with marlin. Steve is gong again tomorow so we have a chance to do better. Aloha Capt Rusty

It was still dark as we pulled out on this day of 20 kph trades going to my next favorite buoy. At the buoy we baited and hooked a mahi on our first pass and landed it. Next pass one more mahi, then 2 on one pass, and then they stopped biting so we jigged and caught some aku and shibi and ran one live. These guys were trooppers on this sorta rough day. Back in the harbor only Thomas was bold enough to eat a mahi eyeball gladly. good going men you were fun to have aboard.
Aloha Capt Rusty

Then we jigged and caught a few aku and shibi and ran on live. Back in the harbor only I ate an eyeball , good going guys you were troopers. Aloha Capt Rusty

Then we set up and trolled out and found an open school and we took a slam on the center and Scot baited up one more mahi, only it came off and Ted landed a nice 24 pounder. On our way in we had a 10 pound aku slam the center and then come off right at the boat bummer. Back in the harbor I was the only one to eat a mahi eyeball, good going. Aloha Capt Rusty

At another buoy we jigged and caught a bunch of small shibi and aku and ran an aku live, it was fun fast action but nothing big. Then on our way in just 4 miles from Haleiwa we saw our first humpback whale sighting  of the season, a pod of 3 whales headed north, this is the earliest I have seen them here. In the calm darkness off we go with 20 kph sw winds going to a west side buoy. Nothing at the buoy so we keep going 15 miles out and all we found was an aku school that did not bite. At the buoy on our way back we baited and Scot hooked a 10 pound barracuda and Don got it. Then on the ledge we found some birds and Scot baited up a nice 35 pound shibi then he had to keep a shark busy on the other side of the boat to keep it from our fish, it worked Don landed a 35 pounder, good going. We had a few more bite but not shibi and all came off. Back in the harbor Don was brave enough to eat a shibi eyeball gladly, I like it, you folks were great to have aboard. Aloha Capt Rusty

At the buoy it looked dead so we kept going and found an open school of mahi and the big bully ate the rigger and was on. Susan was the angler and did great landing this monster mahi. We had one more hit but it came off in the same school. Then there was lots of nothing the way home. These folks did great on this rough day, good going. Aloha Capt Rusty
