The water was real nice for the most part this was the smoothest day of all, with a classic sunset going off.

Capt Rusty with a 30 pound shibi on the Independence, look ma no hands
I am back and unwinding after 16 days of searching for big tunas. First I have to say what a great boat the Indy is, and what a great crew they have. And that last year on this trip they boated 86 tuna over 200 pounds, the best trip ever for them. This was a hunt for big fish But the only one we got was at Clarion a nice 256 pounder. The fish were just not around. We did have a few nice stops on 30 to 60 pounders and one stop with some 100+ pounders. This kind of fishing is so different from what we do that I had a hard time getting into combat fishing at the transom. I am not into big ugly tangels, those deck hands dive right in to untangel some nasty snarles at the transom. I will put up some of the shots of the things we saw along the way, and tell you more. Aloha Capt Rusty

All painted, new zincs, clean props, and red squids this time
She looks good all cleaned up and painted. Back in the water tomorrow she goes. Then on friday I am off to the mainland to go to magic mountain, then on monday down to San Diego to go on a 16 day long range trip on the Independence, then back to magic mountain again, can you tell I am a rollercoaster junkie. I will try to post some reports if I can, if not you can look at the Independence web site to see what we are catching. This will be a great education for me, a whole different type of fishing. Stay tuned. Aloha Capt Rusty

Up and out of the water and after a light pressure washing she looks good
It's that time of year for dry dock, she gets her bottom done and a facial along with some light glassing, what more could a boat ask for, that got new engines last year. I like keeping her bottom clean for speed and a better wake. I will keep you posted as this short dry dock goes along. Aloha Capt Rusty

Sam and Chris Bye caught 7 shibi for a real fun day
A bit after 6:00 we slipped out on this day of 25 kph trades going to my favorite buoy. It was a rough ride, but when we got there we took a 4 banger shibi and landed 3. Next pass Scot baited and hooked a 12 pound shibi, and Chris landed it. Next pass Scot sets the hook on a nice big 65 pounder and Chris boats it with some help from Scot. Then it was Sams turn and she landed a nice 40 pounder, then a 35, good going. These folks did great on this wild day of big seas. Aloha Capt Rusty

The Utleys Matt, Joe, Dan, Crystal, Jon and Tina caught 7 shibi for a fun day
At 10 we got going on our first trip of the new year with 15 kph trades going to my old favorite buoy. Arriving there it was lifeless so we went to a more lifelike buoy. There we baited and Scot was hooking some 8 to 12 pound shibi. It looks like the big fish have left the buoy for a while, but the rats are still nibbleing and they are fun. When the bite slowed to a stop we jigged and caught a few more shibi that way, these folks did a good job on these fish today. Aloha Capt Rusty
